Meditations - Marcus Aurelius

· Updated

Notes

Odd to me that Marcus's lone surviving son was considered a tyrant. Considering Marcus himself was considered such a "good emperor". Raising my child to be a good human being is probably my top priority. Although I suppose I can't control the outcome. I think what I care about is doing everything I know to help her become a good human being. I can control that.

For stoics, highest good was the virtuous life. Work with God for the common good.

Nothing is good but virtue. Nothing but vice is bad. Everything else just is what it is.

Stoics carefully distinguish between what is in the power and what is not.

Strong insistence on unity of the universe, and mans's duty as part of a great whole.

Gratitude. Goodness of nature made him grateful to everyone.

What the heart is full of, the man will do.

Endure labor; nor to need many things

when I have anythig to do, to do it myself rather than by others

Don't busy yourself with vain things.

Learn how to receive favors and kindness. Be thankful.

Humility.
